Sunset Views Boulevard

Wyndham City Council - 2022

Tarneit, VIC

Overview

Following a streetscape upgrade, Wyndham City Council was set to deliver an artistic urban intervention along Sunset Views Boulevard that aligned with the goals of a State government grant for urban revitalisation in Tarneit.

The semi-permanent intervention consists of a colourful 90-metre protected footpath that provides a sheltered, better lit, and more comfortable journey between Leakes Road and Tarneit Train Station.

Challenge

  • Create a pedestrian-friendly environment on an otherwise car-dominated road.

  • Improve safety and amenity for the area.

  • Design, procure, and deliver a solution within a limited timeframe (3 months) to comply with State Government grant requirements.

  • Have virtually no impact on the newly upgraded footpath surface and be able to be easily removed if needed.

Solution

  • A self-standing, off-the-grid linear shelter structure that repurposes discarded shipping containers and creates a playful pedestrian corridor.

  • After a few iterations exploring design opportunities, shipping containers were chosen due to their structural sturdiness, customisable potential, and commercial accessibility in a short timeframe.

  • The colourful structure would also assist as a wayfinding and place identification tool as it can be easily spotted long before reaching the destination.

  • Large blank walls also offer a canvas to showcase the work of local mural artists and reduce the perceived walking distance to and from the station.

Result

  • Objectives of the State grant achieved within the required timeframe.

  • Community reception under assessment
